Message from the CEO
Have you been watching hit HBO series “The White Lotus?” The devilish satire of the super-rich on holiday shows a blackly comic collision of blazing sunshine, gorgeous scenery, ludicrously well-appointed luxury resorts and groups of deliciously dysfunctional guests. And as fans of the series know, despite every possible manifestation of indulgence, comfort and opulence, things never turn out well.
We watch “The White Lotus” with a blend of envy and gratitude. Envy at the exotics locales. Gratitude our own holidays don’t (usually) collapse in a toxic mass of intrigue and murder. But there is another significant factor in the show’s success – its brutal skewering of the cliched expectations of luxury travel in the 21st century. Each season has been set in one of the White Lotus franchise resorts, where guests have come for ostentatious luxury and sanitized prepacked cultural experiences. Yet as the drama unfolds, characters begin to discover that material comforts fall ludicrously short of addressing their deeper desires. So-called ‘VIP travel,’ The White Lotus so vividly demonstrates, is in of itself, not a panacea for all out ills and anxieties.
The latest season of the show coincides with our relaunch as Charlotte, a new publication carrying the legacy of Mirandus into a new era. Our evolution is driven by a renewed commitment to new ways of being present in the world, redefining at a granular level, how meaningful and nourishing mindful travel can be, as opposed to passive, one-size-fits-all luxury experiences. We want to reframe our perspectives towards holidays; whether a romantic break or a family getaway. We seek to create moments that simulate the mind, inspire the imagination, nuture our bonds with loved ones and ourselves.
