FINLAND
Finland is famed for its show-stopping starry shows, particularly in its northernmost region, Lapland, where towns including Rovaniemi, Levi, and Inari are known for their clear skies and frequent aurora displays. If you’re travelling with children to see Northern Lights, head to Tonttula Elves Hideaway. This fantastical place brings to life Finland’s culture and history using elves, costumes, live reindeer and mythical creatures.
ICELAND
Iceland has established itself as a firm favourite for Northern Lights viewers during its snowy winters. While it’s possible to see the Northern Lights from Reykjavik on clear nights, it’s better to head to nearby Pingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that offers stunning natural landscapes and relatively dark skies. The remote and rugged Westfjords region, meanwhile, is another great spot for Northern Lights viewing, as it’s away from urban areas.
CANADA
Canada’s Yukon territory, part of the country’s remote north, is another one of the world's great places to catch the Northern Light: head to the tiny township of Tagish for some of the best panoramas. While there, enjoy additional arctic adventures like hiking along the Arctic Circle Trail or dog sled rides along the Takhini River. After spending a few cold nights staring up the sky, you can head closer to the capital of Whitehorse and warm up at the Takhini Hot Pools.
